You're invited to experience the magic of the season and discover why the Outer Banks should be a top holiday destination!
On Dec. 17 at 9 a.m., Wright Brothers National Memorial, the First Flight Society and Outer Banks Forever will celebrate the accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright on the 121st anniversary of their first heavier-than-air, controlled, powered flight. Park entrance fees are waived on this special day.
This year, the First Flight Society will induct Charles McGee (1919-2022) into the Paul E. Garber Shrine. During World War II, McGee served in the Army Air Corps as one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Flying for the racially segregated 332nd Fighter Group, McGee participated in numerous combat missions over Europe, escorting bombers and engaging enemy aircraft. McGee’s career spanned three wars—World War II, Korea and Vietnam. In 2007, he received the Congressional Gold Medal along with other Tuskegee Airmen for their bravery and service, and in 2020, McGee was promoted to Brigadier General, an honorary promotion acknowledging his service to our country—both in the air and in promoting racial equity.
Following several speeches, a special portrait of Charles McGee will be unveiled. A wreath laying ceremony by descendants of the witnesses of the first flight is scheduled to occur after the unveiling of the portrait of McGee. The portrait will then be installed in the Wright Brothers National Memorial visitor center at 11 a.m.
Outer Banks Forever plans to livestream the entire event for those who cannot attend the event on Dec. 17.
Ranger-led educational programs are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Demonstrations with the replica 1903 Wright Flyer will occur throughout the day, and the Wright Brothers Monument will be open for visitors to view the lower atrium (weather-dependent). Visitors are invited to attend these free programs and participate in the park’s free Junior Ranger program. The park will remain open until 5 p.m.
