Dive into the OBX Folklore Map
One of the most exciting aspects of GIS Day is the unveiling of the
OBX Folklore Map,
created in partnership with the Dare County Library. This interactive map invites you to explore
the
spooky and mysterious locations unique to the Outer Banks. From ghostly apparitions at haunted lighthouses
to
legendary shipwrecks dotting our shores, the map serves as your virtual guide to the
region’s most
captivating tales.
As you navigate the map, you’ll encounter a variety of historical locations and
intriguing
facts, each with its own story that sheds light on the names and landmarks we know today.
For
example, discover the enchanting Joebells flowers, those vibrant red and
orange
blooms that line our roadsides and dunes. Unravel the mystery of the
Ghostly White Stallion, said to haunt Penny Hill in Carova, or learn about
the
fascinating history of the former lifesaving station in Kitty Hawk, now the beloved Black
Pelican
Restaurant.
