Unveiling the Mysteries of the Outer Banks: Celebrate GIS Day 2024!
Mark your calendars for November 20th, 2024—it’s GIS Day! While many may not be aware of the powerful Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services offered by Dare County, this incredible resource is available at no cost to residents and visitors alike. With it, you can explore property tax information, flood zones, and property values throughout the county. But there’s even more to discover!
Dive into the OBX Folklore Map
One of the most exciting aspects of GIS Day is the unveiling of the OBX Folklore Map, created in partnership with the Dare County Library. This interactive map invites you to explore the spooky and mysterious locations unique to the Outer Banks. From ghostly apparitions at haunted lighthouses to legendary shipwrecks dotting our shores, the map serves as your virtual guide to the region’s most captivating tales.
As you navigate the map, you’ll encounter a variety of historical locations and intriguing facts, each with its own story that sheds light on the names and landmarks we know today. For example, discover the enchanting Joebells flowers, those vibrant red and orange blooms that line our roadsides and dunes. Unravel the mystery of the Ghostly White Stallion, said to haunt Penny Hill in Carova, or learn about the fascinating history of the former lifesaving station in Kitty Hawk, now the beloved Black Pelican Restaurant.
Get Involved!
In addition to exploring the online map, you can also participate in a special raffle! Each of the three Dare County Libraries—Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, and Hatteras—will be giving away a 24″ x 36″ framed poster of the OBX Folklore Map. To enter, simply visit one of the libraries before November 20th and fill out a free raffle slip. It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring a piece of Outer Banks history into your home!
While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to check out the publications that inspired the map. You’ll find pamphlets and reading materials that provide first-hand accounts of these intriguing tales, enriching your understanding of the Outer Banks’ folklore.
