The Outer Banks are all about sun, sand, and surf, but sometimes a little rain throws a wrench in those beach plans, but fear not! The OBX has plenty to offer to keep you entertained even on a rainy day. Here are some ideas to get your Outer Banks adventure back on track:
Dive into the Deep:
North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island: Explore the wonders of the Atlantic Ocean at this world-class aquarium. See fascinating marine life, from playful otters to majestic sharks swimming in a huge tank right in front of your eyes. Be sure to visit Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head as well, where you can see a 3,000 gallon aquarium full of eels and fish or take a walk out on the concrete platform to try your luck at fishing and to view the Outer Banks from 1000ft out in the Atlantic Ocean.
Channel Your Inner Artist:
Get Crafty: Unleash your creativity at a pottery studio like OBX Art Studio or Kinnakeet Clay Studio. These studios offer classes or open studio time for you to make your own masterpiece.
Island Bookstore: Curl up with a good book from a local bookstore like Island Bookstore. Many stores feature local authors and unique selections. With a store in Kitty Hawk and in Scarborough Faire in the town of Duck, you won’t have to miss out on visiting and finding your next beach read!
Embrace the Competitive Spirit:
OBX Bowling Center: Strike up some fun at the OBX Bowling Center in Nags Head. It’s a great option for families and groups, with lanes, arcade games, and snacks to keep everyone entertained.
Jumpmasters: Got some built up energy from being stuck inside all day? Jump it out! Visit Jumpmasters Trampoline Park – a large indoor trampoline center in Manteo where the whole family can play a friendly game of dodgeball, try out the ninja warrior course or just jump around in the only trampoline park on the beach.
Relax and Recharge:
Spa Day Bliss: Treat yourself to a relaxing spa day at one of the OBX’s many spas. Soothe your muscles and unwind after a long trip.
Coffee and Comfort: Grab a delicious cup of joe and a pastry from a local cafe like Front Porch Cafe or Ashley’s Espresso Parlour. They are the perfect spots to relax and support local OBX businesses while on vacation!
Rainy Day Bonus:
Don’t forget that some activities can still be enjoyed with a little drizzle! Take a raincoat and explore the Wright Brothers National Memorial or one of the many historic lighthouses.
No matter your interests, the Outer Banks has something to keep you entertained, rain or shine!
