Community Spotlight: Southern Shores

Did you know that Southern Shores was the first planned town of the Outer Banks? Named by it’s developer, Frank Stick, with it’s woodsy coastal vibe in mind, Southern Shores is the perfect community to visit any time of the year.  Here, you won’t find the large mini-mansions seen in all the other Outer Banks towns.  Instead, you’ll see mid-century architecture plotted throughout the beautiful tree filled communities and family-friendly beaches to enjoy.

Benefits to Staying in Southern Shores

Located at the intersection of Highway 158 and NC-12, Southern Shores is the first town that visitors pass through when heading to the northern beaches of the OBX. In just a few short miles, you can be in the Town of Duck where there are shopping and restaurant options galore! Take a stroll along the sound front boardwalk or enjoy the live entertainment and fitness classes (in-season only) that take place at Town Hall. Did we mention that they’re free to attend??

Don’t forget about Corolla while you’re visiting! The town of Corolla is the northern-most town along North Carolina’s Outer Banks and offers so much to do any time of the year. Make your climb up the Currituck Lighthouse or take a drive on the beach in Carova where you can see wild horses in their natural habitat living amongst the homes and communities, right on the beach!

If the central OBX is more your style, Southern Shores is also just a few miles from the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. Typically, these towns are a bit busier during the summer months, however, with public beach accesses and plenty to do and see within each, you’ll find something for everyone during your visit. Don’t miss the chance to visit where the Wright Brothers took their first flight in Kill Devil Hills, or climb atop Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head to capture the beauty of an OBX Sunset.
